Paralympics—Not Worthy of U.S. Media Attention?
by Jen ~ August 27th, 2008. Filed under: 2008 Olympics, 2008 Paralympics.
Equestrian sports have never been the center piece of U.S. Olympic coverage (especially dressage). And the Paralympics have never gotten the same media attention as the Olympics. So what do you get when you put the Paralympics together with equestrian sports? Apparently nothing. When the Paralympic games start on September 6, 2008, none of the equestrian events will receive any U.S. television or online streaming coverage.
There are countless problems with the Paralympics not getting adequate coverage—too many to deal with in this post. But I find it particularly disturbing that equestrian sports get ZERO coverage. Obviously this is because my interest lies with equestrian sports. But this is also because dressage is a sport that makes ALL able-bodied enthusiasts want to quit the sport out of frustration at one point or another (okay, sometimes this happens weekly). Now imagine learning and competing dressage at the higher levels when you have a disability of some sort—it definitely makes me think that some of Anky’s limelight should shift to these dressage Paralympians!
So, in an effort to give these athletes some of the attention they deserve, over the next week and a half, Exhibit X Dressage Wear™ will profile all five members of the U.S. Paralympics Equestrian Team. So get ready to find out more about Robin Brueckmann, Barbara Grassmyer, Rebecca Hart, Keith Newerla, and Lynn Seidemann. In the meantime, happy riding!

thankyou for this post, it bothers me as well that there is very little coverage (a little more here in Australia) of the equestrian sports and especially that there is almost nothing about the paralympics. I’m sure that the athletes you are going to profile will greatly appreciate your work and I am looking forward to learning more about them,

Thank you - first for your beautiful site which I StumbledUpon. It was the logo which caught my attention (I just love it) and then to see a site actually mentioning equestrian sports, Olympics, and disabilities, well, now you really have my attention!
Thank you, in advance, for highlighting the lives of our paralympic team - their lives matters and together we can create a warm, nurturing environment of acceptance, respect, encouragement and appreciation. As a disabled horse lover myself, I simply cannot thank you enough for bringing attention to this.
Blessings,
